MPs from the Social Democrats and Greens, on the other hand, spoke of a “dirty deal” with Tunisian President Kais Saied that did not live up to Europe’s values. Human rights organizations such as Human Rights Watch (HRW) accuse the Tunisian security forces of severely mistreating African migrants and sometimes abandoning them in the desert.
MPs from the right-wing camp, however, called the pact inadequate to limit the increasing number of migrants. Instead, the EU must deport people more quickly.
The EU Commission and Tunisia had signed the declaration of intent for a closer partnership. The pact is intended to prevent refugees from irregularly migrating to Europe and improve the fight against smugglers.
In return, the EU promised Tunisia border protection funds worth 105 million euros. Further aid worth millions is linked to a program run by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
