The school’s house rules have recently regulated how students are (or are not) allowed to dress. For example, girls have to hide the base of their breasts and belly button behind their clothing. In addition, the trousers must not be shorter than a hand’s width from the crotch limit. Bonnets or caps are forbidden for boys. In addition, no discriminatory texts or images or glorification of drugs or violence may be visible on the top. And: Shoes must not have a tread that allows dirt or moisture to stick. A photo that was leaked to “NÖN” shows the gender-specific dress codes.

The school’s director defends the regulation. “We think it’s important that the students recognize: There is a workplace, in this case the school, where 1,100 students and teachers work together,” she is quoted in the NÖN. Some would only wear “a sports bra,” says the director. The ban on bare midriffs “of course also applies to boys”. The director emphasizes that the dress code was decided in consultation with the parents and student representatives.
Ministry reserved
The ORF Lower Austria confronted the Ministry of Education – and received a cautious reaction: “According to § 44 SchUG, it is possible to set school behavior agreements in the house rules. However, we do not see this as a basis for obliging students to wear a school uniform.”
The Green Party’s education spokesman was critical: “Freedoms are being curtailed here that do no harm to anyone,” Georg Ecker was quoted as saying.
