The LEADER region Perg-Strudengau is entering the new funding period from 2023 to 2027 with a wave of new projects and ideas for regional development. On Thursday, the project selection committee met for the first time for this period under the leadership of Chairman NR Mayor Nikolaus Prinz. Five LEADER projects were presented by project sponsors and five regional development projects. Following the presentations, funding from the EU Regional Development Fund was decided for all project sponsors.
One of the funded projects comes from Mauthausen: “Fairytale Danube Market” – a different kind of fairytale trail that combines historical locations from Mauthausen that are worth seeing with well-known fairytale scenes. Weatherproof large-format pictures measuring two by one and a half meters are mounted on a mobile base and placed at a different location in the market center every year. The highlight is that the fairy tale scenes are portrayed by well-known Mauthausen personalities. The project sponsor is the Mauthausen Tourism Association with its chairman Gottfried Kraft.
A funded LEADER project from Bad Kreuzen also jumps back into the past like the fairy tales. A permanent exhibition on the spa history of the place will be set up in the castle tower of Kreuzen Castle under the title “More than 175 years of the healing power of water”. The project sponsor is the Burg Kreuzen Foundation. Mayor Manfred Nenning and tourism chairman Leopold Schöller presented the project.
Stones from Saxen for the Ringstrasse
Another LEADER project builds a bridge between the Strudengau and the federal capital Vienna: the creation of public access to the quarry in Saxen from which the stones for paving the Vienna Ringstrasse and Karlsplatz were extracted in the 19th century. The central figure in this stone delivery was the court noble Anton Schlepitzka. In 1894 he also had an artistic stone chapel built in the forest above the quarry he ran. This was purchased by the Lehbrunner family in 2022 to make it accessible to the public. This initiative is now supported by LEADER funding.
LEADER support for the Mauthausen – Gusen – St. Georgen awareness region will continue. After the House of Remembrance has been built, the focus in the coming years will be on strengthening the online presence and contemporary signage of historically significant places. In this way, the project promoters around Andrea Wahl want to reach young target groups. In addition, advertising materials and event technology for the human rights symposium will be purchased and further developed over the next three years.
A project from Pabneukirchen that also received funding is set entirely in the present: the construction of an Ö3 weather station on the roof of the Strudengau. To date, there is no recognized weather station in the region. The closest ones are in Enns and Bad Zell. This proves to be particularly disadvantageous for agriculture and hail insurance when documenting extreme weather events. The “Leisure Tourism Economy Pabneukirchen” association has now teamed up with “Strudengau Wetter” to operate a recognized weather station in the Riedersdorf district.
