Formula 1: Verstappen eleventh in Singapore qualifying – Sainz on pole
McLaren’s Lando Norris (Great Britain) during the qualifying in Singapore.

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz took pole position ahead of George Russell in the Mercedes. Red Bull has won all 14 races so far this season, Verstappen has won the last ten in a row.

“I don’t know what to say. This is shocking to experience,” he radioed to the pits. Verstappen had already complained about problems on Friday and in the last free practice session on Saturday. The two-time world champion, who has never won in Singapore, was seven thousandths of a second behind. Of all people, New Zealander Liam Lawson, who currently drives for AlphaTauri as a Red Bull replacement driver, kicked Verstappen out in tenth place. He also has to fear punishment.

Bad accident

There was a serious accident in the first qualifying segment, which led to a longer interruption. When the time for the first section had already expired, Canadian Lance Stroll lost control of his Aston Martin. The car hit the barrier of the narrow street circuit with great force and was thrown back onto the track. The left wheel suspension and half of the side pod were torn off or destroyed.

But Stroll radioed to the pits: “I’m okay.” Because a lot of fluid came out of the car and the barriers were badly damaged, the clean-up work took some time.

Verstappen’s step to his third world title

Verstappen can take another step towards his third world title this Sunday (2 p.m. CEST/live ServusTV, Sky). Depending on the outcome of the race at the Singapore Grand Prix, he could mathematically complete another triumph just a week later in Suzuka, Japan. He has 145 points more in the ranking than his teammate Pérez in second place.
