The Italian government is declaring war on private landlords who advertise their apartments on online platforms such as Airbnb and do not tax their income.
The plan is for every private landlord to receive an identification number that will be included in a national database for tourist accommodation, according to a draft law drawn up by the Ministry of Tourism. The code, which is assigned by the regions, must be displayed on the websites and at the entrance to the holiday apartments. Anyone who cannot produce this code will face fines of up to 5,000 euros.
It is also planned to generally only allow short-term rentals for two days or more. But this only applies in the historical centers of large cities and towns with a lot of tourism.
