After flooding in Greece, two rescued victims have been identified as Austrians who have been missing for more than a week. The Foreign Ministry in Vienna announced this on Saturday evening. “The results of the DNA comparisons that are now available have confirmed that these are the two people who have been missing since the severe floods,” it said in a statement. According to Greek media, the couple came from Graz and were newly married.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the families and survivors in these difficult times,” the Foreign Office emphasized. “The team at the Austrian Embassy in Athens will continue to support the relatives. The ministry asked for their understanding that no further information would be released.
Holiday accommodation was washed away
According to local media, the Styrian couple were staying in holiday accommodation in the hard-hit Pelion region near Volos on the Greek mainland, which was washed away a week and a half ago on Tuesday. Since then there has been no contact with the holidaymakers, they could not be reached and were considered missing.
A week later, according to media reports last Tuesday, a female body that was initially unidentifiable was found in the affected coastal area. A DNA test on the dead to determine their identity was ordered. On Thursday, the Foreign Ministry also confirmed the discovery of an initially unknown dead man in the flood area. At the weekend there was now certainty: “We have the sad duty to announce the death of two Austrian citizens in Greece,” said the Foreign Ministry.
Rainfall amounts of unprecedented levels
From September 4th to 8th, a severe storm settled over central Greece. Heavy rain flooded villages and towns in many places. The amount of precipitation reached unprecedented levels of more than 700 liters per square meter in less than 24 hours. More than a dozen people were killed, including the two Austrian citizens. Storm “Daniel” moved on to Greece towards North Africa – and also caused catastrophic floods in Libya with thousands of deaths.
