The Roman legionaries of the Legio XV Apollinaris are already preparing for the weekend. On Saturday, the only Roman group in Upper Austria from Pram will set up camp again at the Zwinger at the big Roman festival in Wels.
The troupe with its centurion Walter Flotzinger is known for its authentic and historically based depiction of Roman life and detailed replicas of armor and weapons, most of which they made themselves.
Drilling in the Roman camp
The legionnaires will show the equipment of the Roman soldiers and various battle formations, they will provide insight into the training of the Roman soldiers, drill, shoot with bows and arrows and demonstrate how the Romans used catapults. The program also includes the measurement of a camp site as well as a declaration of war with an invocation to the gods and an evening roll call.
In the Minorites, a special exhibition of current and restored excavation finds can be seen with free admission, including the most recent sensational find, the ivory knife handle, which received international attention and shows the connection between the ancient Romans and China. “Ivory objects are special because they were a material for luxury goods. This proves the wealth of the ancient city of Ovilava,” says Wels city archaeologist Renate Miglbauer. Guided tours are offered for children and adults.
Current excavation finds
Experts also provide information about the current excavations west of the local train station, where the remains of buildings and a mosaic floor have now been uncovered, as well as about the excavations in Achet am Reinberg.
At the Roman market on Schießerhofplatz in front of the museum entrance, the culinary delights are not neglected. Visitors can taste Roman wine from Carnuntum and beer brewed by employees of the technical college. Food that was already available in Roman times and jewelry based on ancient models are also offered for sale. Visitors can also mint their own coin or look over the shoulder of a blacksmith at work.
In the Minorites there is also a writing room for children where they can practice with quill pens and ink, they can also make a bookmark out of papyrus and try out old Roman games.
Wels Roman Festival, Saturday, September 23rd, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., admission is free.
