An international coach crashed in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Carinthian district of St. Veit an der Glan near Micheldorf. According to police, a 19-year-old Upper Austrian woman died and around 20 other passengers were injured.
Most of the injured were taken to the Friesach Hospital, and a seriously injured German woman (25) was taken to the Klagenfurt Clinic. The double-decker bus with 40 passengers and two drivers on board was on its way to Trieste. At around 4.45 a.m. the bus left the roadway of the Friesacher Bundesstrasse (B317) for reasons that are still unclear, tipped over a guard rail and came to rest on its side.
The inmates come from several countries; a police spokeswoman named Austria, Slovenia, Italy, Germany and Ukraine. The coach’s route led from Berlin via Linz to Trieste. A driver following the accident called emergency services after the accident. Breathalyzer tests on the drivers were negative. The on-site surveys were not yet completed.
The Red Cross crisis intervention team looked after the slightly injured and those affected. Several local fire departments were involved in the rescue and clean-up work with 55 people. The Althofen fire department reported in a broadcast that numerous passengers, including injured people, were still on the bus when the rescue workers arrived.
Three people were taken out of the accident vehicle using hydraulic rescue equipment. The emergency services helped the remaining passengers out of the overturned bus with ladders. Because so many injured people had to be taken to hospitals, the fire brigades also helped with transport.
