He is now returning to his chair in civil law and wants to complete four research semesters. His plan: to establish a focus on democracy and the rule of law in the digital space. He also announced a spin-off. Lukas’s eight-year term from 2015 to 2023 included, among other things, the construction of the medical faculty including the new medical campus in the city center, the redesign of the JKU campus in Urfahr, the establishment of the Linz Institute of Technology (LIT), and the collaboration with Ars Electronica and the start of an artificial intelligence course, which now – like medicine – has 1,500 students. In the AI sector, numerous attempts had to be fended off, there was a “scary anger” surrounding the professors, not just Sepp Hochreiter, who heads the Linz AI Institute and, as is well known, was able to be retained.
During his time as rector, the number of chairs increased by 70 percent from 126 to 215, the number of students increased by a quarter from 19,400 to 24,300, and the three-year global budget more than doubled from 312 to 640 million euros, which was largely due to the Faculty of Medicine, he summarized at his farewell press conference in the Kepler Salon, the “former living room” of the JKU’s namesake. In the next two years, Lukas wants to devote himself to research projects at home and abroad, especially to the topic of the constitutional and democratic anchoring of artificial intelligence. He is also planning a spin-off, but he did not want to reveal any details yet.
The topic of IDSA (Institute of Digital Sciences Austria) – the digital university that is currently being founded and which Lukas applied to head but did not get a chance – is closed for him. He said he doesn’t think it’s appropriate to give advice from the sidelines. But he wishes the project all the best; he is convinced that it is of great importance for the location. Lukas wants to get further involved in the Circus of Knowledge and in the Kepler Salon, where science is conveyed in a clear way and in connection with culture.
