Vienna: Terror suspect wanted to strike at the main train station

On Tuesday evening, the Vienna public prosecutor’s office confirmed a report to the APA that a young Islamist who was arrested the previous week on suspicion of terrorism was already at Vienna’s main train station with a knife to set off a firecracker and then stab startled passers-by. “But he then decided not to put his plans into action,” said authority spokeswoman Judith Ziska.

The suspected Islamist arrested last Tuesday is only 16 years old, Ziska corrected previous media reports in an interview with the APA. The teenager – an Austrian with Turkish roots – is said to have radicalized himself on the Internet and paid homage to the ideas of the terrorist militia “Islamic State” (IS). In the end, he expressed concrete attack plans in a chat group, posting a photo that showed him in camouflage clothing and with a combat knife.

He wanted to take action on 9/11

On Monday last week – probably not coincidentally on the anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 – he made his way to the main train station, but then didn’t follow through with his original intentions. According to “Standard”, the 16-year-old spent the night of last Tuesday in a mosque. As the spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office confirmed, the teenager was arrested on the street on Tuesday. On Thursday, the regional criminal court sentenced him to pre-trial detention.

The Interior Ministry made the arrest public at the weekend. The suspected IS supporter is currently being investigated for membership in a terrorist organization. Further surveys and the evaluation of data carriers and objects that were seized during a house search will show whether further terrorist crimes will occur.

During his first interrogation as a suspect, the 16-year-old is said to have confirmed that he had an attack in mind and would have accepted the risk of dying himself. In this regard, the teenager is said to have cited the attackers in Vienna, Berlin and France as “role models”.
