If it works, it works. After Xaver Schlager took a giant step towards the European Football Championship finals with Austria’s national team in Sweden (3-1), the 25-year-old from St. Valentin became the match winner in the Champions League: RB Leipzig had a perfect start in the group stage and celebrated a 3:1 (1:1) victory over the Young Boys on the artificial turf in Bern.
The preliminary decision in front of 31,500 eyewitnesses in the Wankdorf Stadium came in the 73rd minute, Schlager scored with a long-range shot into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1. Then all the frustration that had been building up because Xavi Simons had waited in vain for a penalty whistle was released (68′). “This hit is a hit,” wrote the Bild newspaper. A former Red Bull Salzburg player also scored the final point: “Joker” Benjamin Sesko completed a counterattack to make it 3-1 (92nd).
There were no goals at Milan’s Meazza Stadium: AC Milan and Newcastle United drew 0-0.
