“We are getting closer and closer to a major disruption in economic and financial systems and trade relations”warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres at the start of the general debate at the General Assembly in New York “splitting up the world”. Without institutional reform, problems could not be addressed effectively. The United Nations is increasingly concerned about the confrontation between the West and Russia, the rivalry between the US and China, and the inequalities between rich and poor societies. Guterres appealed to the heads of state and government to find solutions together and renew international structures. Statesmanship is needed instead of standstill.
More than 140 heads of state and government will give speeches at the general debate for around a week. For the first time since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyj took part in person. In his speech, he accused Russia of threatening many other countries with its aggression. Moscow also uses instruments other than weapons – “and these things are being used not only against our country, but against yours as well”said Zelensky to the member states.
US President Joe Biden also called for people to stand together in his speech: “If we allow Ukraine to be dismembered, no one will be safe.”
