The EU Commission has issued a ban on deliberately added microplastics such as the granules on artificial turf and loose glitter in cosmetic products. The ban should apply to all products that release microplastics during use, as the commission announced. The new regulations are intended to prevent up to half a million tonnes of microplastics from ending up in the environment. It affects plastic particles that are smaller than five millimeters, insoluble and difficult to degrade. In the future, detergents, fertilizers and pesticides, toys and pharmaceutical products will no longer be allowed to contain microplastics. Products used at industrial sites are excluded. The regulations come into force on October 15th. The first products such as cosmetics with loose glitter or microbeads may then no longer be sold with immediate effect. A transition period applies to other products.
