Today SV Ried can compete against a Bundesliga team again

Games against Bundesliga teams should become a reality again in the Innviertel in the future, and not just in the cup: today, second division team SV Guntamatic Ried will take on Oberhaus club Wolfsberg in the second round (7 p.m.). Sports director Wolfgang Fiala on the cup competition, the opportunities and the upheaval last summer after relegation:

OÖNachrichten: In the 2nd league, SV Ried is the favorite in every game. does it well, when you don’t have this pressure, at least in the cup?
Wolfgang Fiala: Of course it is a completely different starting situation. But we are confident that we can keep up with a Bundesliga team. In our setting, we see ourselves as a Bundesliga club, which is why we want to achieve promotion again in the next two years.

Currently you only have the opportunity to compete with upper house teams in the cup. What significance does this competition have?
We were in the semi-finals last season and in the final two years ago. The Cup traditionally plays a big role for Ried.

There was a big upheaval in Ried in the summer. How satisfied are you with the result?
It was really difficult to estimate what awaited us in the new league. And of course it takes time for everything to come together. Considering the enormous change, I am very satisfied. The aim must be for us to have a better squad than in the Bundesliga. If we make further adjustments in the next transfer periods, this should also be possible.

However, you cannot be satisfied with the current number of points.
The game performances have been pointing in the right direction since the Leoben game (note: 2-0 in the fourth round). We are on the right track again, especially at home. But it is clear that we should actually have a few more points.

Coach Maximilian Senft has so far only scored an average of 0.96 points as Ried coach. Why is he the right man?
You have to get the context right. In the Bundesliga he took over the team during a difficult phase. He had no preparation and the squad was given to him. Since summer we have ushered in a new era. Such a change also takes time. You have to have a very negative attitude towards SV Ried if you don’t see that things have progressed, especially in the last few weeks.

In the past it was always said that the board had too much say in sports. You have been the sole sports director since the summer and new elections are coming up soon. Is there a wish?
I can only speak from my perspective: Many clubs are successful when there are few decision-makers who can work autonomously. This is certainly the case at the moment, the areas of responsibility have been clearly defined. Nobody talks into me, but I won’t let anyone talk into me either.
