SV Ried coach Maximilian Senft changed his team to no less than seven positions compared to the 0-0 draw on Saturday in Bregenz in the evening cup game against Bundesliga club Wolfsberger AC – but the fresh forces weren’t enough to cause a surprise in the 1-2 draw.
In the first half, chances were scarce in front of 2,000 visitors on both sides – until the 43rd minute. Wolfsberg’s Mohamed Bamba was only half-heartedly attacked by the Ried defense team during his solo. The result: 0-1 for the favorite from Carinthia.
After halftime, WAC knocked on the ball for the first time with a shot against the crossbar in the 55th minute. The Rieders kept up without becoming dangerous in front of the goal. There was a lack of penetration in the final third. The WAC took advantage of its second good chance in the second half to take a 2-0 lead in the 71st minute, with Bamba scoring again.
Gütlbauer prevented an extension
The Innviertel team showed a lot of morale and scored 1-2 through David Bumberger (75th), substitute striker Wilfried Eza missed a double chance to equalize in the 78th minute. Ungar tried from a distance (87′), but in added time Beganovic and Eza were denied from close range by the quick-to-react WAC goalkeeper Lukas Gütlbauer.
The Rieders did not live up to their reputation as “cup specialists” after reaching the final in 2022 and participating in the semi-finals last season. On Friday (6:10 p.m.) the Ried team continues their league game with the home game against Horn. For the team and fans who loudly supported their team against the WAC, only complete success counts.
