There is “enough influenza vaccine for everyone,” it said in a release. The fact that vaccination centers can no longer order the senior vaccine provided for the public vaccination program “does not mean that older people can no longer be vaccinated with it,” it was emphasized.
The flu vaccine, which is available throughout Austria for the first time this year with a prescription fee deductible of seven euros, is being distributed by the ÖGK. There are also free vaccination programs in retirement homes and for the nasal spray vaccine for children.
One million vaccine doses
According to the ÖGK, 80 percent of the approximately one million vaccine doses have been ordered so far or have arrived at doctors’ practices and vaccination centers. The number of vaccination doses is based on the average vaccination rates of recent years and was ordered by the federal government. This means that – depending on the age group – vaccination rates between ten and 13 percent can be achieved.
The vaccine intended for seniors has already been ordered by the vaccination centers (doctors’ practices, retirement homes), emphasized the ÖGK. It is stored for collection in pharmacies or vaccination centers and is waiting to be vaccinated in the coming weeks. Most influenza vaccinations are only given between mid-October and the end of November in order to achieve better effectiveness until spring.
20 percent not yet requested
Doctors’ practices and retirement homes that still need a vaccine can switch to other vaccines (approved for all age groups), explained the ÖGK. Of course, seniors could also be vaccinated with these vaccines. Of these, 20 percent have not yet been requested and are waiting to be ordered.
