“Te quiero” – I love you – are the first words out of Rolando Villazón’s mouth on this evening of the “Great Voices” concert series in the Linz Music Theater, which truly became a declaration of love – to music, the art of song, but also to the audience.
With his partner on the piano, the French Sarah Tysman, the Mexican world-class tenor, himself a guest at the Linz Music Theater for the first time, presented those magical moments that reveal themselves to the heart and do not have to be captured in pictures. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” Villazón pleaded before his request not to take photographs, as a flash of lightning flashed through the hall at the beginning: “We’re making art here,” which he brings to his listeners with total dedication and winning warmth. when he picks up the microphone between song blocks to introduce the next works.
Four of the “Aria Antiche”, from a collection by Alessandro Parisotti from the 17th century, open the journey through time that should lead from Alessandro Scarlatti to the 21st century in just over two hours. He had selected “three of the most beautiful arias for you, dear audience” from the “master of melody”, Vincenzo Bellini, and Villazón presented his beguiling bel canto gifts in the next part.
You glide along as if on an endless stream of his warm, supple voice, which powerfully immerses you in great feelings but also celebrates lyrical subtleties, with Sarah Tysman proving to be a sensitive accompanist on the piano. In small, grateful gestures, Rolando Villazón repeatedly directs the applause to his partner at the piano. You can feel that the two are attuned to each other in a common mission to celebrate the art of song and not themselves. Two songs and romances lead into the early work of the 25-year-old Giuseppe Verdi, and Puccini’s first published song can also be heard. With Francesco Paolo Tosti, the duo is dedicated to an Italian who became a “superstar” in London in the late 19th century and was a close friend of Puccini, to whom a separate section is also dedicated.
“Canzoni” brought this moving, emotional evening to a close in the 21st century, with the Linz audience also being able to experience a premiere: a song by Ernesto de Curtis was also new for the duo. The final “Musica Proibita” by Stanislao Gastaldon is said to have paved the way to happiness in love for many shy people, as long as they performed it even remotely as intimately as they experienced this time. Three encores – including a song by Villazón’s Mexican compatriot María Grever – sent the enthusiastic and warmed audience into the autumn night.
