Even if we don’t like to think about it, accidents can happen to anyone. What if skin, nerves and bones are lost? The goal of tissue regeneration research is to produce new, functional tissue or to give the body the tools it needs to create new tissue itself.
The Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology (LBI Trauma for short), with locations in Vienna and Linz, is developing new therapies for tissue regeneration in order to restore tissue function after an accident and thus ensure a return to a normal lifestyle after an injury. In this way, the institute supports AUVA in its mission to ensure the best possible care if the worst comes to the worst.
Cornelia Schneider is responsible for science communication at LBI Trauma. After studying biological and environmental engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria, Campus Wels, she worked on the development of biomaterials for cartilage regeneration and the influence of light on stem cells. Schneider is involved in many teams both at home and abroad and is therefore in an excellent position to provide information about this interesting medical topic in a conversation with OÖN science editor Klaus Buttinger.
