“It’s very quiet at the moment, everything in the city is pretty disciplined,” said Linz city police commander Karl Pogutter in an OÖN interview on Tuesday around 9 p.m. There have been isolated reports of firecrackers being thrown and noise being made, but the situation is currently “not at all comparable” to that of Halloween night 2022.
They are well prepared and have a large number of emergency services on site. “The entire highway, which was the focus of events last year, is under our supervision,” says Pogutter. In addition, there will also be increased controls in the southern parts of the city in Auwiesen and in the Solar City: “Wherever there are a lot of people, there are police.”
Staff increased
After the riots on Halloween night 2022 in downtown Linz, staff were increased in all districts of Upper Austria and the three statutory cities of Linz, Wels and Steyr. A lot has been learned from the Halloween riots of the previous year, in which around 200 young people attacked police officers, some of them violently.

Surveillance in digital space
After the young people radicalized themselves, especially in the digital space via social media, these platforms have been monitored for weeks – to the extent permitted by law – by the Ministry of the Interior and the State Police Directorate.

Stones and pyrotechnics in the city center
Last year, a young person posted a video that fueled the flash mob-like riots. Parallels were drawn to the feature film “Athena”, which is about street battles and police violence in the French suburbs. In fact, there were riots by young people in Linz’s city center – mostly with a migrant background. Officers were pelted with stones and fireworks.
It subsequently handed down 25 criminal convictions. The ringleaders received partial or conditional prison sentences. According to the police, there were also 200 “severe” administrative penalties.
