Chains are only permitted if the road is completely covered with snow or ice. The winter tire requirement applies until April 15th of the following year, for buses until March 15th. The winter tire requirement always applies to trucks over 3.5 tonnes and buses, i.e. regardless of whether there is snow on the road or not.
Anyone driving without winter tires in snow and ice will face a fine of 60 euros. If other road users are endangered, you could theoretically face a fine of up to 5,000 euros. Models that are marked with the designation “Mud and Snow” (M+S, MS or M&S) and have a tread depth of at least five millimeters, or six millimeters for diagonal tires, are legally recognized as winter tires.
