The club wrote in a press release that the results were excellent, with five stars each. “Adults and children sit very safely in each of the cars tested,” says Max Lang, ÖAMTC vehicle safety expert. “And the results were also consistently satisfactory in terms of safety for vulnerable road users.”
However, in all vehicles tested, the A-pillars in particular are still too hard. Apart from that, parts of the hood and the lower area of the windshield usually pose a major risk of injury to cyclists or pedestrians.
Assistants need to catch up
In a direct comparison between Japan and China, the three Chinese models (BYD Dolphin, BYD Seal and XPeng P7) also have a little catching up to do when it comes to safety assistants. “However, what all of the tested vehicles have in common is an obvious weakness in the fatigue and occupant status detection assistants,” says Lang. “These don’t yet work as reliably as they should.”
Especially in the recent past, there has been an increasing number of young brands from China in the ÖAMTC crash tests. “These vehicles have been on the market in China for quite some time,” says Lang. However, expansion into the European market is in full swing. “The results of the current test make it clear that they can keep up with comparable European or American models in terms of safety.”
