“After this victory, our pride in the team’s performance was even greater,” said SKV coach Markus Eitl after SK BMD Vorwärts Steyr’s 2-1 away win in Weiz. With the two central defenders Stefan Goldnagl and Milan Ziric as well as Max Richter, Lukas Prokop, Jakob Kolb and Oliver Filip, six regular players no longer made the trip to the last autumn game.
But the forward hospital once again outgrew itself against the Styrians, who were nominally much stronger. And that despite the fact that there were some players in the game who had played in the 1st Class East in the spring. “We were really on the last groove,” says Eitl, who sent midfielder Meriton Kabashaj onto the field to head up the defense in the back three in his time of need. Unimpressed by his new role, he served Paul Staudinger ideally in the third minute and he pushed in to take the early lead. Just five minutes later, Staudinger had the chance to make it 2-0, but his shot hit the crossbar. “We could have taken a clearer lead, but unfortunately we didn’t take advantage of our chances,” says Eitl.
After the break, Hamza Ech Cheikh, who came on for the injured Daniel Bilic, was fouled just outside the penalty area and the Weizer transgressor was sent to the locker room with a red card (58th). The Styrian goalkeeper parried the subsequent free kick from captain Mirsad Sulejmanovic, and Alvaro Collazo’s follow-up shot also didn’t find its way into the goal. The situation on the other side was completely different: a quarter of an hour before the end of the game, Weiz managed to equalize out of nowhere through Jan Ostermann. Valerian Hüttner in the forward goal had no chance.
However, the Red and Whites didn’t let the fall finale take away the butter they deserved. “The Styrians still had their hands up when they were cheering, but we picked it up again,” says Eitl. Staudinger, who showed his best performance of the season in Weiz, passed sharply to the middle and Ech Cheikh scored the winning goal (76′).
In the final minutes, another equalizer hung in the air as Weiz threw everything forward, but the Styrians were unable to capitalize on their last big chance in stoppage time.
Vorwärts is in fourth place with 25 points and a goal difference of 16:15 – just one place and four points behind title favorite Wels.
“We have now laid a really good foundation for the rest of the season in the fall,” says Eitl, “we can build on that, especially because many players have long-term contracts.”
