Clemens J. Setz awarded the Austrian Book Prize

Clemens J. Setz

In a figurative sense, Clemens J. Setz intelligently illuminated the nature of all aluminum hat wearers and conspiracy theorists with his novel “Moons before the Landing,” which was published in February. In this book, the 2021 Büchner Prize winner covers the life of Peter Bender, born near Worms in 1893, who was seriously injured in a shot down as a pilot lieutenant in the First World War and, in the omnipresence of the National Socialists, of the American Cyrus Teed the declining so-called “hollow world theory”. Last night, the jury of the Austrian Book Prize (endowment: 20,000 euros), which has been running since 2016, named this mixture of a conspiracy theorist who has to compete against an even more bizarre conspiracy theory – that of the Nazis – as the best novel of the year.

The four other authors on the shortlist will each receive 2,500 euros: Milena Michiko Flasar for “Above Earth, Below Heaven” (Wagenbach Verlag), Wolf Haas for “Eigentum” (Hanser Verlag), Maja Haderlap for “Nachtfrauen” (Suhrkamp) and Linz-born Teresa Präauer with “Cooking in the Wrong Century” (Wallstein Verlag), who is also the only Austrian nominated for the Bavarian Book Prize awarded today.

The jury awarded the debut prize, endowed with 10,000 euros, to the 26-year-old, Vienna-born author Arad Dabiri for his debut novel “Drama” (Septime Verlag). Dabiri, who studied comparative literature in Vienna and has previously published prose texts in anthologies, looks at the on the one hand depressing, on the other hand ecstatic federal capital of the young generation from below – in contrast to the beautiful children of the First District. He prevails against the Viennese Thomas Oláh and his band “Doppler” (Müry Salzmann Verlag) as well as against Eva Reisinger, who comes from the Eferding district, with “Männer Kill” (Leykam Verlag).
