Impairments in posture, balance and gait affect around 90 percent of all advanced Parkinson’s patients. According to scientists, a typical symptom is a sudden blocking of movements, which is known as “freezing”. This cannot be effectively treated with the usual therapy methods – dopamine and deep brain stimulation using electrodes.
In the case of the patient from France, who has been suffering from Parkinson’s since 1996, the proven treatment no longer worked and the symptoms worsened. “I practically couldn’t walk anymore. I fell over five to six times a day,” explains the 62-year-old at a media event. In 2021, the neuroprosthesis was inserted into his spinal cord. It consists of electrodes and an electrical pulse generator. The electrodes stimulate so-called motor neurons and thus specifically activate the muscles. The successful implementation of the implant is based on the team’s several years of research. This should now be continued.
