The Carinthian completed the 3.8 kilometer route in front of the Matterhorn mountain panorama on Wednesday in 2:05.93 minutes. The original plan was to have an even longer run, but the original start was reduced to 3,720 meters above sea level out of consideration for the runners and because of the susceptibility to wind on the Gobba di Rollin.
Striedinger was 32 hundredths of a second ahead of the Italian Benjamin Jacques Alliod, the Swiss Niels Hintermann was 37 hundredths behind. The second best Austrian was Felix Hacker from Carinthia, +1.36 seconds behind in twelfth place. Daniel Danklmaier was 1.41 seconds behind, Christoph Krenn 1.44. Both Austrians were just faster than Marco Odermatt, the overall World Cup winner from the previous season.
Stefan Rieser (+2.23), Marco Schwarz (+2.40), Christian Walder (+2.72), Stefan Babinsky (+2.95), Johannes Strolz (+3.22), Manuel Traninger (+3 .33), Vincent Kriechmayr (+3.50) and Daniel Hemetsberger (+4.00) were each further behind.
“Very cool”
Numerous runners, including Striedinger, did not pass all the gates correctly. “I was a bit of a test pilot with number two and didn’t have that much information about the route,” said the Carinthian.
“It’s certainly a very cool track to start with, it can’t be compared with the classics, but on the whole everyone you talk to is enthusiastic.” This also applied to Black. “It was very cool to drive,” said Striedinger’s close compatriot.

“You have to be able to glide well on the descent. The jumps are easy, it’s really fun to go down there.” The organizers had “done a brutal job, especially with the snowfall in the last few days”.
Only the Lauberhorn descent is longer
Further training sessions are planned for Thursday and Friday. The two departures are scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday (11.30 a.m./live on ORF 1). Since the giant slalom in Sölden was canceled without scoring due to strong winds, these are the first two races in the men’s World Cup this season.
The new Gran Becca race track is the highest and second longest in the Ski World Cup. Only the Lauberhorn run in Wengen is even longer at 4.5 kilometers.
The most spectacular and demanding passage is the Matterhorn jump at 3,614 meters in the upper section. The first reserve start would also be before the jump; the second option is the women’s start at 3,505 meters. The women will have their Matterhorn premiere the following week.
