Sturm Graz had no chance at 0-1

There was nothing to gain for SK Sturm Graz in the 0-1 (0-0) draw at Atalanta Bergamo in the Europa League. After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, the Styrians had no chances to score despite a good start to the game. After the break, the favorite from Bergamo turned up the heat – and was rewarded for it. When the hosts crossed, the Storm defense couldn’t get the ball far enough away. After a blocked shot, Breat Djimsiti was free at the five-pointer and scored to make it 0-1 (50th).

The people of Graz couldn’t think of an answer, even though coach Christian Ilzer risked everything. Atalanta were significantly closer to scoring their second goal than Sturm was to equalizing.

This puts the Graz team in third place after Sporting Lisbon’s 2-1 win in the parallel game against Rakow. The gap to the Portuguese and the lead to the Poles are each three points. It is also positive for Sturm that they won the direct duel against the last team, Rakow, 1-0, and so their chances of third place are good. That would mean overwintering in the European Cup.
