The union has entered the ring with a demand for a wage increase of 11 percent, but there is still no offer from employers in the retail sector.Vienna. The next KV round at the dealers is on Thursday. A deal before the metallers is considered unlikely. In Vienna, employee representatives and employees have been marching through the city center since 11 a.m. to give more emphasis to their demands. The final rally will take place at lunchtime at the opera on the corner of Kärntner Straße. Employer chief negotiator and trade chairman Rainer Trefelik has a fashion store right there.

In the negotiations, retailers point to declining sales, falling employment figures and an increase in bankruptcies. There were 483 retail bankruptcies in the first half of the year, putting the industry at the top of the bankruptcy statistics, said Trefelik. Well-known retailers such as Kika/Leiner, Forstinger, Gerry Weber, Reno and the Sport 2000 cooperative Zentrasport had to file for bankruptcy this year.

From January to September, retail in Austria recorded a real decline of 3.5 percent compared to the same period last year, Statistics Austria recently announced. The number of employed people fell by 1,700 compared to the previous year – “and we fear that this is not the end of this trend”said Rainer Will, managing director of the trade association.

“I expect that the union will be prepared to take a step towards us in the next round of negotiations”said Trefelik at a press conference on Tuesday. “Of course, creative solutions also mean one-off payments. This helps companies in the currently very difficult earnings situation, but employees also benefit”said the employer representative. The union rejects one-off payments for the approximately 430,000 employees in retail.
