Fosse wrote in an email to the Norwegian newspaper “VG” that he rejected all program items that Nobel Prize winners in literature were not obliged to take part in. The Swedish Academy informed him that he could forego the press conference because he had already given so many interviews.

The Nobel Foundation announced that all further interviews with Fosse had also been canceled. The only item on the program that Fosse has to complete as a Nobel Prize winner for literature is his own Nobel lecture, said press spokeswoman Rebecka Oxelström according to “VG”. He will hold this on December 7th. He could decide about everything else himself. Fosse will also speak to students about his work.

The 64-year-old Norwegian, whose secondary residence is in Hainburg, Lower Austria, assured that his reduced program did not mean that he did not value the Nobel Prize. Other writers didn’t even come to the award ceremony. He himself is most looking forward to the moment when he has finished the awards ceremony program. “Larger social gatherings don’t bring me joy, on the contrary,” he wrote.

The Swedish Academy awarded Fosse the world’s most important literary award in early October for his innovative plays and prose. The prize, which is endowed with eleven million crowns (around 950,000 euros), is traditionally presented on the anniversary of the death of the prize founder Alfred Nobel (1833–1896).
