Biden and Xi Jinping meet in the US today
November 15, 2023 – 00:00

The meeting will be in San Francisco during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.

US President Joe Biden said yesterday that his goal for this week’s talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping is to resume normal communications between the two superpowers, including contacts between military forces. Biden said he is trying to improve the United States’ relationship with China, after a period of tensions. Biden and Xi will meet today in the San Francisco area during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. It will be only the second in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in January 2021. Asked how he would measure the success of his long-awaited summit talks with Xi, Biden said before leaving for San Francisco: “Back to a normal course, to correspond and be able to pick up the phone and talk to each other in a crisis, and to be able to ensure that our military still has contact with each other.”Biden said it would benefit everyone if the average citizen in China had a job with a decent salary. “But I’m not going to continue supporting a position that to invest in China we have to reveal all our trade secrets,” he said. The Chinese severed military-to-military contacts with the United States in a fit of pique after the then- Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi will visit Taiwan in August 2022. Restoring contacts is one of the main objectives of the United States to avoid miscalculations between the two militaries. Relations between the two countries cooled after Biden ordered the downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon flying over the United States in February. But senior Biden administration officials have since visited Beijing and met with their counterparts to rebuild communications and trust.
