28-year-old dies after lip injections in Vienna

After the death of a 28-year-old as a result of treatment in a Viennese beauty salon, the Donaustadt Clinic defended itself against allegations made by her family on Thursday. The 28-year-old had “an extremely rare autoimmunological reaction” in the hospital, it was said at a press conference at the hospital on Thursday. There was no chance of healing her. According to initial reports, the family blames medical negligence for her death.

Lothar Mayerhofer, medical director of the hospital, emphasized in a short-term press conference on Thursday: “In retrospect, we know that we never had a chance due to this extremely rare immunological reaction.” This was a “reaction with an extremely rapid course” that was not known from studies but only from individual cases.

The 28-year-old had her lips injected in a Viennese beauty salon on October 4th. A few days later, the woman got a headache, then initially turned to the Floridsdorf clinic and was given painkillers there, but finally went to the Donaustadt clinic because of persistent symptoms. However, she was only prescribed immune-boosting drugs there, rejected several times and only admitted on October 17th, as the media reported, citing the family. A day later the woman died. “We are therefore convinced that the medical treatment was not carried out carefully,” the legal representative of the 28-year-old’s husband was quoted as saying.

The woman’s family now accuses the clinic of delaying the woman’s treatment and thus contributing to her death. However, Mayerhofer firmly rejected these allegations on Thursday. “We examined them in detail four times in total.” The first time, the woman’s head was checked with a computer tomograph. At that time, however, there was no indication for admission, it was said. “No hospital in the world would have admitted her at that point,” said Mayerhofer. When the patient visited the hospital for the third time, she was finally offered admission. “But she refused them, including the medication,” said the hospital’s medical director. The woman was able to leave the hospital alone at the time. During the press conference, Mayerhofer also referred to relevant documentation from the hospital. “The fourth time it was finally clear that she was required to be admitted.”

Died during ongoing therapy

The woman then “died while undergoing therapy.” A pathological examination was initially unable to provide a reason for her death. During an autopsy by a forensic doctor, a “terrible immunological reaction” was discovered, said Mayerhofer. The hospital expressed its condolences to the relatives on Thursday, but emphasized that the doctors had done everything they could to help the woman. “But so many areas and systems were affected that we couldn’t have helped her and there wouldn’t have been any medication,” added ward doctor Regina Katzenschlager, head of neurology with acute geriatrics.

According to the daily newspaper’s report, the relatives’ lawyer is now demanding grief compensation, payment of funeral costs and bridging money. If the health association does not comply with this, it would like to file a lawsuit through civil law, it was said. On Thursday, Mayerhofer brought up the Viennese Patient Advocate’s Compensation Fund in front of media representatives. This way the family could at least receive financial compensation. The fund is said to be particularly suitable for such cases.

According to the doctors, it is not yet clear which substance was used in the beauty treatment. There has been no trace of the beautician since then. According to Katzenschlager, the hospital tried to reach the beautician several times. “But the number that the patient gave us during the course of the treatment is one where you can’t reach anyone,” said the doctor. It was said that there was great interest in clarifying which substance was injected.
