President Luis Lacalle Pou highlighted Spain as “the first foreign investor” in the country, with more than 200 companies located in the national territory and presenting an accumulated investment in the order of 7,000 million dollars.

The president made these statements today to EFE in the Embassy of Spain in Uruguaywithin the framework of an act to entrepreneursorganized jointly between the embassy and Sembrando, the Presidency program that is promoted by the president’s wife, Lorena Ponce de Leon.

Lacalle Pou summarized the good bilateral trade relationship between the two Spanish-speaking nations, and the economic impact for both States in one sentence: “If Uruguay things are going well, Spain is going to do well.”

On the other hand, he noted in his speech that “Uruguay It is an entrepreneurial country, but there is a lack of support and strategies”, despite the fact that “there has been great progress from the public and private sectors” in this regard.

Likewise, he valued the leap that it represents for employees to go entrepreneurs on their own, since they “must invest, think and take care of their own family and many employees” once they take that step.

To conclude his speech, the president thanked the Sembrando program for its “fundamental” work throughout the country, especially in smaller communities, where sometimes good ideas arise that do not find a market for their development, which is why it is important generate “the possibility of expanding their market by computer means or to access a large area.”

For its part, Ponce de Leon highlighted the need to continue supporting small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the country, since they represent 99.6% of national companies and generate 66.5% of jobs in the country.
