While the fighting in the Gaza Strip continues in earnest, a possible post-war order is being debated in Israel. It may “no vacuum” Israel’s President Yitzhak Herzog said in an interview with the “Financial Times”. There must be one there in the future “very strong force” remain to prevent a resurgence of the Islamist terrorist organization Hamas.

However, he left it open what this power might look like. Herzog said he assumes that the US and “our neighbors in the region” would play a role in the post-war order.

Herzog said about the high number of victims in the Israeli military operation in the Gaza Strip: “I worry about the Palestinian deaths, it breaks my heart.” However, he always remembers that, above all, he must defend the security of his own people. Israel’s main goal is currently to free the approximately 240 hostages from the violence of Hamas and other terrorists.

Yesterday the Israeli army said it had… “operational control” taken over the port of the city of Gaza. The army said ten terrorists were killed in the military operation with the support of the navy and air force. Ten tunnel shafts and other terrorist infrastructure were destroyed during the operation, it said.

According to its own statements, the Israeli army also attacked the house of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya in the Gaza Strip. The building was used as a terror infrastructure and often served as a meeting place for senior Hamas leaders, the Israeli military said.

Netanyahu under pressure

Israeli opposition leader Jair Lapid has called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down. Netanyahu’s Likud, the largest party, should elect a new prime minister and we will get to work together, Lapid wrote yesterday on the X platform, formerly Twitter. “The time has come – we need a national government of reconstruction.”

The Likud party rejected Lapid’s statements. She accused him of seeking a government that would build a Palestinian state.
