The Monegasque driver set the fastest time in the Nevada desert on Saturday and will start the eagerly awaited penultimate race of the season in the gambling metropolis on Sunday (7 a.m. CET/ServusTV, Sky) ahead of world champion Max Verstappen in a Red Bull. Mercedes driver George Russell, who who had previously won the third training session, is in third place on the grid.
Ferrari team-mate Carlos Sainz came second in qualifying, but the Spaniard was moved back ten places on Friday due to damage to the car that was not his fault. Leclerc took the 23rd pole of his career and the fifth of this season. Verstappen is aiming for his 18th victory in the 21st race of the season at the Grand Prix in Las Vegas. If the Dutchman wins, he would then draw level with Sebastian Vettel as number three on the all-time best list with 53 successes.
