Two other people suffered serious injuries, the gendarmerie said on Sunday. A total of 18 people were treated by rescue workers during the incident that night.
It is unclear whether they were all injured in the scuffle in Crépol, west of Grenoble. The local broadcaster France Bleu wrote of one dead, two seriously injured, six slightly injured and ten people in shock.
A spokeswoman for the gendarmerie was initially unable to say exactly how the altercation broke out at the celebration in a community hall. Around 400 people were present at the celebrations. The investigation is ongoing and it is not yet clear who the perpetrators were and what their motive was.
The local broadcaster France Bleu reported that around 1:30 a.m. a dozen young people tried to get into the private party. The security guard stopped people and then a violent confrontation began. Several people then came out of the hall and the argument came to a head. According to France Bleu, the man killed was 16 years old and died on the way to the hospital.
