According to initial investigations, the tiger was a four-year-old Sumatran tiger that had been kept illegally as a pet since birth, said the head of the nature conservation authority in East Kalimantan province, Ari Wibawanto, to the news portal Mediakaltim.com. They now want to take the animal to a protected area, said local police spokesman Yusuf Sutejo.
Police photos and video showed the tiger was kept in a cage that was in a locked room. The Sumatran tiger, the smallest living subspecies of big cats, lives in Indonesia. Animal protection organizations estimate that there are only between 400 and 600 specimens of Panthera tigris sumatrae left today. In addition to poaching, the loss of natural habitat, for example through palm oil plantations, has also decimated the number. The animals are listed as endangered on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
