The snow is coming: 8 recommendations on how to winterize your house

Snowy and very cold winters have become rare – but you should not be unprepared for the onset of winter when it comes to your house and property or apartment. Not only drivers, but also homeowners are quickly caught off guard.

The OÖN lists 8 tips with which you can winterize your property in order to avoid unpleasant surprises such as damage, insurance or liability cases.

1. Roof/Gutters: Check the roof tiles or have them checked, at least in older buildings. If roof shingles are twisted or damaged, replacement is strongly recommended. If bricks are completely missing, you should of course use new ones. Firstly because otherwise it will get wet, secondly because it can get wet.
2. Gutter: Rain gutters, drains and gullies should be cleared of leaves. Otherwise, water will collect and freeze at low temperatures and could cause pipes to burst. Or rain or meltwater overflows, drips onto facades and causes mold to form. Don’t forget leaf traps and seepage shafts, otherwise damage can occur.
3. Cables: Leave the taps on the house wall completely off and shut off to prevent water from freezing in the pipes. Some facilities empty themselves, older parts do not.
4. Windows/Doors: Check whether the windows close tightly. If not, there will be a draft – heating costs will rise. Place a sheet of paper in the window frame. If you can pull it out with the window closed, there is something wrong with the hardware or seals. They should be replaced or adjusted. It may be enough to lubricate window fittings and locks with Vaseline. It’s similar with the doors. Sealing strips and door mats can help with a gap here.
5. Heating: If you haven’t already done so, you should have your space heating system checked. Not only a car, but also the house and the heating need service. The control and heating curve should be set correctly.
6. Garden: If you haven’t already done so: put away the garden furniture and equipment, make rejuvenating cuts on plants and bushes, mow the lawn one last time. Remove leaves from the lawn and areas where they could become a slipping hazard. Trees that may not be able to withstand a storm or snow pressure should be removed, and dangerous branches should be cut off.
7. Rooms: Snow shovels and gravel should be ready to hand: According to the road traffic regulations, homeowners in the local area are obliged to clear the sidewalk in front of the house between six a.m. and 10 p.m.
8. Ventilate: Another tip for air supply: In winter, it is advisable to ventilate houses and apartments. Open the windows several times a day, for ten minutes each, and diagonally (opposite sides). If you tilt the windows in winter, condensation and ultimately mold can form on the walls.
