After the 2-0 win against France, Austria’s U21 national soccer team has something like a mandatory match in the Innviertel Arena in Ried im Innkreis on the agenda. Werner Gregoritsch’s selection must confirm the sensation on a friendly level today (6 p.m., ORF Sport+) and confirm their role as favorites in the showdown with their peers from North Macedonia.
“Of course there was a lot of euphoria after the France game, but now the focus is on the next task. Our goal is clearly to get the next win,” emphasized striker Bernhard Zimmermann.
“The hallmark of great teams is that they don’t rest on their laurels, but instead confirm it. We need the same willingness to push our limits as we did on Friday,” said Coach Gregoritsch. They proved that the North Macedonians should not be underestimated in the current European Championship qualification with a 1-0 victory over Sweden. “We mustn’t underestimate them under any circumstances,” warns the team boss.
The balance sheet still speaks clearly for red-white-red: in three duels there were three wins without conceding a goal (2:0, 4:0, 2:0). Simon Seidl from Blau-Weiß Linz is bursting with enthusiasm. His ÖFB team debut against France inspired the 21-year-old. “I was welcomed very well. This group has the greed to want to win every game.”
A successful end to the year would not only bring a merry Christmas, but also lift the spirits before the next competitive game against Cyprus on March 26th.
