Three quarters of all journeys are made by car, but the proportion of bicycles is increasing rapidly

The car is the number one means of transport in the Steyr-Land district. This is shown by the traffic survey carried out by the state of Upper Austria and just published in 2022. According to this, around three quarters of all journeys – exactly 73 percent – are made by car, which is also above the national average. Although the share of private motorized transport (MIV) in all journeys has fallen by 1.1 percentage points in the past ten years, car journeys in absolute numbers have still increased by 10,435 to 117,180.

There were increases in the number of distances traveled in the district in all areas except public transport. In absolute terms, the decrease in the ten-year comparison was only 105 trips, but the share of public transport in total traffic shrank significantly from 8.6 to 7.7 percent. In the case of the so-called mixed form of MIV-public transport, the absolute minus was 101 trips; in proportion there was a decline from 1.6 to 1.4 percent.

Citizens in Steyr-Land make 13 percent of their journeys on foot, which corresponds to an increase of 17.3 percent. However, the greatest increase was recorded in distances traveled by bicycle. Although the share of total mobility is still only 4.9 percent, the increase is significant at 67 percent.

According to State Transport Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FP), further attractiveness of public transport is planned in the Steyr-Land district. There will be a reduction in frequency, especially for S-Bahn line 1 from Garsten to Linz. There are also feasibility studies for improving cycling traffic.
