Attempts are now being made there to control the masses of snow. There are currently 70 fire departments in continuous operation. Fallen trees are blocking the roads and massive snow loads are squeezing power lines. The main problem at the moment is the roads, according to Johann Treiblmaier, section commander and deputy. District commander of the Braunau fire department in an interview with the OÖN: “All main connections are impassable, at least in places.” This also applies to the B156, the Lamprechtshausen federal road.
The situation is precarious: numerous communities can no longer be reached via transport routes, and many households have no electricity. The communities affected include Geretsberg, Schwand, Hochburg-Ach, Uttendorf and Überackern. Überackern is hit particularly hard: the power supply in the entire community has collapsed. There is currently no information as to when the repair can be expected: “The problem is that the technicians cannot get there so quickly at the moment due to the situation on the roads,” says Treiblmaier.

The fire brigades are now working at full speed to at least keep side routes clear so that emergency services can get through. As in Überackern, for example, this is an almost hopeless undertaking. Branches that are heavily loaded under the masses of snow hang dangerously downwards, and in many cases it is not possible to cut them free: “That would be life-threatening in some places,” says Treiblmaier. Even if a snowy winter is not uncommon in the Innviertel, the current situation is certainly exceptional: “I can’t remember a situation like this in recent years.”
He doesn’t think the snow load on the roofs is alarming yet: “We’re currently seeing around 40 centimeters, maybe it’s more in some places. That shouldn’t be a problem for buildings for the time being.”
