Upper Austria: Heavy snowfall is slowly subsiding, bitter cold from Sunday

Given the snow chaos in the country, people in Upper Austria are wondering how much snow is still to come. Clearance vehicles and the fire brigade are already in constant use. Trees and roofs groan under the weight of snow. The all-clear comes from the weather experts at GeoSphere Austria. “The heavy snowfalls are over, the precipitation in Upper Austria is becoming weaker everywhere,” says meteorologist Claudia Riedl to the OÖNachrichten.

According to their forecast, another five centimeters will be added by Sunday afternoon. The situation in Upper Austria should ease as early as this evening. According to the weather report, the last clouds should have cleared by midday on Sunday, “then we expect the sun to come out.” Riedl also speaks of Sunday as an ice day with temperatures of minus 9 to minus 1 degrees. The clear night from Sunday to Monday gets really cold. “We are expecting temperatures in the double-digit minus range,” says Riedl. On Monday morning that means freezing cold on the way to work with temperatures between minus 14 and minus 8 degrees.

Although it continued to snow in many parts of the country on Saturday afternoon, meteorologist Steffen Dietz from the international weather service Ubimet (www.uwz.at) also confirmed that the snowfall would subside until the evening hours. “On Sunday morning there may still be light snow in the Mühlviertel and Hausruck, but there will hardly be any change in the snow depths.” The fire brigade and electricity suppliers are worried about the wind forecast for Upper Austria: But here too, Dietz gave the all-clear on Saturday afternoon. “The wind will increase slightly in the next few hours, but only individual gusts will reach up to 40 km/h.” There will be the most wind southeast of Linz. Since the snow has not yet frozen in many places, the wind could even blow it off the trees,” suspects Dietz.
