Start of the ski season: queues in Schladming

In the Styrian ski areas in Schladming and Haus, the rush this Saturday was so great that the road in front of the Planai had to be closed and pictures of the waiting crowd made the rounds on social media, reported the “Kleine Zeitung” on Sunday. The lift operators identify a need for optimization due to the 2G controls.

In the current lockdown, skiing is permitted in contrast to many other leisure activities. However, when purchasing the lift ticket, winter sports enthusiasts must prove that they have been vaccinated or have recovered. The head of the Planaibahnen, Georg Bliem, said in the “Kleine Zeitung” that they reacted quickly and had already increased their staff for Sunday.

On Twitter and Co., pictures of the crowds in front of the valley station of the Planai-Bahn made the rounds:

The ski season also got off to a good start a few kilometers down the Enns, on the Hauser Kaibling. “The 2G checks still take a while at the till because we are very precise here,” said managing director Klaus Hofstätter of the newspaper. Hofstätter also admitted “need for optimization”. According to the media report, there were waiting times at the weekend in other ski areas.

2000 skiers in Upper Austria

In Upper Austria, where the starting shot was given on Saturday in Hinterstoder and Gosau, around 2,000 skiers were out and about on the slopes. “70 percent have already activated their tickets at home and combined them with a 2G certificate. This of course saves us long queues at the cash desks,” said Helmut Holzinger, director of the Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm board.

Some ski areas are also open in Carinthia, Salzburg and Tyrol, including the one in Ischgl since Friday. Other ski areas, such as the Stuhleck am Semmering, will open in the next few days. In many places, the starting gun will be given on St. Mary’s Day on December 8th.
