After many millions have flowed into the city center in recent years – the renovation of the western part of Kaiser-Josef-Platz (starting in 2025) and the expansion of the Volksgarten to the Traun are still open – the city of Wels is now concentrating on the districts. There was widespread criticism that these were being neglected.

After inspecting the neighborhoods with residents and online surveys about citizens’ satisfaction with their district, the implementation of smaller and larger measures will gradually begin this year. “Through the district discussions we received a lot of suggestions that we are incorporating into the further development of the districts,” says FP Planning Councilor Ralph Schäfer.
According to the evaluations in the districts of Vogelweide, Neustadt, Gartenstadt, Lichtenegg, Pernau and Laahen, there is a general desire for more parks, trees and social meeting places. Citizens also want more events in their district, more cycle paths and sidewalks and the renovation of residential streets.
More green, more parks
Mayor Andreas Rabl emphasizes the importance of parks and playgrounds for different age groups. “Wels is growing rapidly, a single-family home in the countryside is no longer affordable for many people, so more people will live in apartments that need more greenery and space to move around,” says Rabl. On the agenda, for example, is the redesign and expansion of the Peace Park in the Garden City. A calisthenics park is planned in Pernau (Haidlweg). The Wimpassing leisure facility will also be redesigned, and the dog off-leash area will be given a new, flood-proof location. In the medium term, new district parks are planned in Lichtenegg (behind the FAB competence center) and in Pernau (behind the ÖAMTC base).
There is also a need for improvement in playgrounds that are equipped with additional play equipment (e.g. Sandwirtstrasse green area, Franziskuspark, Nestroystrasse).
Starting with the Neustadt, a district manager will be hired who will be based in Wels city marketing. “This should take care of revitalizing the districts with events,” says Rabl. In addition to the already established pop-up concerts, there will be local festivals and traditional festivals, for example. The economic service takes care of vacancies in the districts.
In order to strengthen the district core, the renovation and redesign of Vogelweiderplatz will begin this year, and plans will also begin to make Grünbachplatz more attractive as a meeting point for Neustadt residents.
“350,000 euros are budgeted for short-term measures such as chatting benches, tree planting, children’s play equipment and additional manure bins,” says Schäfer.
