A blood test for prostate cancer could be sufficient for early detection instead of the rectal examination with the finger. The rectal examination has no advantages over the PSA blood test. This was the result of a study by the Comprehensive Cancer Center Vienna of MedUni/AKH Vienna, in which data from eight different examinations with a total of 85,738 participants were analyzed.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men worldwide. The conventional methods for early detection include the digital (with the finger, Latin: digitus) rectal examination (DRE) and the prostate-specific antigen test (PSA).
The results of the Vienna study suggest that DRE alone or in combination with PSA may not be more effective in the early detection of prostate cancer compared to the PSA test alone.
