He Ministry of Industry, Energy and Mining (MIEM) reduced the deadlines for granting brands and patents in Uruguayensuring that the times for each procedure are closer to those presented by the countries in the region.

The head of the National Directorate of Industrial Property (DNPI) of the MIEM, Santiago Martinezexplained that the office managed to get the granting of brands be achieved in 3 months and patents in 6 years, when previously the terms were up to 3 years and 14 years, respectively.

“Obviously, it is a period that we understand is still very long and that we have to continue reducing, but we are now closer to the numbers for the region that range between three and five years,” Martínez assured. Likewise, the leader pointed out that about 6,000 are granted per year. brands and 500 patents in the Uruguay.

The DNPI included phonetic search in the system

On the other hand, Martínez reported that the DNPI included the phonetic search in the system in order to avoid confusion with brands previously registered. The modifications to the online procedure will operate starting this Wednesday, and include an improvement in the search engines, as well as the incorporation of new filters so that users can carry out more precise searches.

Until today, phonetic searches were requested in writing from the DNPI, and then the office issued a report communicating its result. “It is important for users, when evaluating the registration request of their brands“said the director.

At the same time, Martinez positively valued the accession of Uruguay to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCTfor its acronym in English) in terms of innovation and insertion into the world.

The measure could benefit pharmaceutical or specialized institutions in biotechnology to settle in the country, at the same time as the national inventors themselves, who have limited possibilities of projecting the registration of their intangibles in other latitudes.
