The JKU wants to become climate neutral by 2030, and a variety of projects and measures for greater sustainability are being supported.
With the Federal Real Estate Company (BIG) as the owner of the buildings, the JKU is now gradually switching to solar energy. For this purpose, large-scale photovoltaic systems are being built on the buildings on the campus in Linz.
Some of the Teichwerk and the LIT Open Innovation Center already have PV systems. The system on the roof of Science Park 5 went into operation at the end of 2023. By the end of this year, systems with at least 1000 kilowatt peak (kWp) should be on the roofs. Science Parks 1 and 4, the LIT Open Innovation Center, the Kepler Building, the House of Schools and the Juridicum will be equipped for this purpose. Kepler Hall and the Learning Center are scheduled to follow in 2025.
Electricity for 350 single-family homes
“We assume that we will use 100 percent of the electricity generated directly and hardly feed it into the grid,” says Alexander Freischlager, JKU Vice Rector for Campus Development, Sustainability and Digitalization.
The systems with a maximum output of 1,500 kWp could supply around 350 single-family homes with electricity by the end of 2025. The total area of the installed PV modules is around 7,800 square meters. Several university professors and their teams are also researching photovoltaics themselves.
