Throughout Austria, Ash Wednesday has been associated with Ried for decades. The reason for this is the political meeting of the Freedom Party. Even in Jörg Haider’s time, the Jahnturnhalle was filled to capacity. It will be no different on February 14th from 7 p.m. At the 31st edition of the Freedom Party’s Political Ash Wednesday, Upper Austria’s deputy governor Manfred Haimbuchner and federal party chairman Herbert Kickl will serve hearty words to visitors over beer and a herring snack. For Kickl it is an important appearance in the 2024 election year, which usually makes it into the ORF broadcast “ZIB2” creates. Erhard Weinzinger, Ried’s FPÖ district manager, has been organizing Political Wednesday since its first edition. “We’ve been sold out for weeks. There will be 2000 people in the hall. The rush for tickets was also regularly great under Jörg Haider and Heinz-Christian Strache, but it was never like this year”says Weinzinger. The FPÖ sympathizers had to pay 18 euros for a ticket, which included a snack and a drink.

Under the motto “Sticking together for an Innviertel of solidarity” There will also be a counter-event on Ash Wednesday “civil society alliance” give. The program starts at 4 p.m. in the foundry (Rainerstraße) with the lecture “What’s old becomes new? National Socialism and the beginnings of the FPÖ – a search for clues” by Margit Reiter, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Salzburg. A poetry slam will take place in the foundry from 7 p.m.

A demonstration is also planned at the Jahnturnhalle from 5 p.m. The main organizers are: “Grandmas against the right”. Several speeches, including by Susanne Scholl, are planned. A demonstration march from the train station towards the market square is planned for 4:30 p.m. Motto of the counter-demonstration: “Stick together against the right”.
