The prison crisis in Ecuador
Only since January 9 of this year, the prison crisis from Ecuador left at least 16 deadsome 178 prison employees held and an arrest warrant for investigative purposes for the escape of ‘Fito’ Macías against the prison director, Nelly Cuzco Ramirez, of whom all trace was lost. Given this, Noboa made a series of decisions to stop the problem that is increasing every day and that left strong images, such as those of the takeover of the TC Television channel at the hands of a Armed group.
Among these measures is the decree, which seeks to reduce the number of prisoners, as well as defuse internal conflicts between various criminal groups. A 2022 prison census established that in total, There were 31,300 prisoners in Ecuador’s 36 prisonsof which 3,245 were foreigners.
In the last 20 days, since Ecuador was declared under “internal armed conflict“to confront criminal groups, near 4,500 people have been arrested. According to President Noboa, as an example, in Ecuadorian prisons there are some 1,500 prisoners of Colombian nationality alone.
