The alarm was received around 1:30 p.m.: Fire had broken out on an agricultural property in the municipality of Neumarkt im Mühlkreis for reasons that were still unclear. Alert level two was declared, twelve fire departments from the Freistadt district responded with around 100 men. The emergency services and police were also on site.

The fire probably broke out in the area of the wooden roof structure. Pictures showed thick clouds of smoke coming from the stable building. The police announced in the evening that most of the 70 dairy cows and numerous calves were able to be brought to safety by their owners in good time.

However, the rescue attempts were not without health consequences for the farmers: they were treated on site by paramedics and taken to the Freistadt Clinic with suspected smoke poisoning. The rapid intervention of the fire brigade prevented the flames from spreading to other parts of the farm.

The operation was still ongoing early on Tuesday evening, but the majority of the fire departments had already deployed again. The police will investigate the cause of the fire; the amount of property damage cannot yet be quantified.
