A wonderfully successful project was actually born out of necessity in Lengau: the Lengauer Laden, a joint project between Lebenshilfe and the community. It is a special local supplier. Not just because around 70 different products from the region are on offer. But also because dairy products, pasta, flour, rice, bread, fruit and vegetables, vinegar and oils, jams and honey, sausage and cheese and more are not sold by just anyone, but by people with disabilities. So good that they have already received several awards for their store. “The situation was as follows in 2017: At that time, our only local supplier and a bank branch were closed. The bank offered the building for sale to the community. An interest group was founded to reuse it. Then we found out about a similar project, just a shop with regional products. We were thrilled,” says SP Mayor Erich Rippl. He brought Lebenshilfe on board as operator. The conditions: The monthly rent for the building is one euro, the operating costs must be generated by the store, i.e. by Lebenshilfe – and they would, because the store is doing well economically, says Rippl. Seven to nine people with disabilities run the business. “People enjoy being involved in economic events and being taken seriously,” says Rippl.
The second project is the generation house. The “Kleeblatt” pilot project enables young and old to get together. Apartments are currently available there for people with care levels 1 to 3 as well as day care twice a week and a seniors’ meeting point.
Young and old under one roof
The first 14 residential units of “Vital Living” have already been occupied. The special thing about it: apartments for young people and a kindergarten will also be included in the generation house in the future. The care provider (“Vital Living”) is operated by the Franciscan Sisters of Vöcklabruck. “The ‘Kleeblatt’ is a social project, so we are not only family-friendly, but also senior-friendly,” says Rippl.
