When the doors to the large hall in the Brucknerhaus open on February 9th at 8 p.m., the greats of the local sports world will meet in Linz. Over the years, the Gala Night of Sports – organized by OÖNachrichten and LIVA with Oberbank as the main sponsor – has established itself as a fixture in the ball calendar and has become an integral part of Linz’s social life.

Preparations have been underway behind the scenes for months in advance, and now – about a week and a half before the event – there is the famous “final spurt”: The dancers from the TopMoves studio in Linz use every free minute to impress the audience with their passion for the opening show To inspire dance sports.

“Everything is included, from lyrical to urban dance to commercial to standard dance. Now the fine-tuning begins,” says Markus Beredits, head of the dance group, which will have intensive rehearsals again next weekend. “We are overjoyed to be a part of this event again this year. There are few events that enliven the Brucknerhaus as much as the Gala Night of Sports.”

Young acrobatic talents

This mainly has to do with the many familiar faces, great shows and great music acts. This always inspires the students of Sport-BORG Linz, who are demonstrating their talent at the ball event for the 20th time this year with their performances in gymnastics, dance and especially acrobatics. “Everything from juggling to slinging is included, the audience can already look forward to it,” says sports teacher Alexander Friedrich, who has been preparing the sports-loving students for the performance since the start of school.

In addition to the young sports talents, the around 70 technicians in the Brucknerhaus are also challenged. The construction work on the stage will begin in exactly one week: 60 static LED spotlights will be installed, six cameras will be in use throughout the evening, and the cables will cover three kilometers in the Brucknerhaus. However, there is hardly any respite for the technicians: “After the athletes’ gala is before the next ball event. The dismantling takes place that night, then the Brucknerhaus is handed over to the next guests,” says LIVA organization manager Wolfgang Scheibner.
